Rocky's Story | Part 6

Yorkshire Terrier Rocky is the elder statesman of my family. He has had a few health problems in the past few months and at one point was tested for Cushing’s syndrome which proved negative. His very large appetite was eventually put down to him simply liking his food and lots of it, in spite of having no teeth!

Rocky loves his walks always on lead as he is becoming increasingly deaf and will wander off. On...

Alice Kitten's Story | Part 4

Well, Alice is now 2 years and 3 months. She is a very small cat with a very big personality and has far exceeded expectations of her long term future which in the early days looked quire bleak. She was diagnosed with rickets but didn’t respond to medication and was on increasingly high doses of Vitamin D and calcium.

Alice was having weekly blood tests, twice daily doses of Vitamin D and calcium carbonate and daily...

Staff Changes

At the end of December, Sue, who has worked at Otterspool for many years decided to hang up her wellington boots to go and work for her husband Tony. We wish Sue well in the future and thank her for all the hard work and effort she has put in over the years.

We would like to welcome Sarah on board who will now be helping with the cattery. Sarah had only been with us a...

Hot Off The Press

As this newsletter was about to go to print we received a call about a mother cat with four young kittens who desperately needed to find a place of safety, fortunately for them we had a spare pen and we were able to accept into our care Charlotte and her four, five week old, kittens. There are two boys and two girls. This new family had been taken into the vets and we were told...

Alice Kitten's Story | Part 3

Alice Kitten is now 18 months old, full of character, bright, alert and continuing to explore her environment, done with some caution as she can still get very easily spooked and react badly. Rain storms and hail on the roof can cause her some distress as she cannot gauge where the sound and movement come from. For that reason she has to remain a house cat but has lots of stimuli in the form of...

Rocky's Story | Part 5

Rocky Yorkie is now 11 years old, this information pieced together from what little we were told by his previous owner’s son. He likes to behave like an elder statesman most of the time, settles himself on the comfiest cushions on the sofa, checks all the food bowls before starting his own meal and likes to sit on the back seat of the car. He challenges my two young daxi boys, especially if they are...

Fostering News

Well, little Alice kitten is now officially a grown up cat having celebrated her first birthday in November! She has been with me for nearly a year and what a year of highs and lows it has been. When she first moved in she was a tiny little thing, very unsure of herself and with a strange head wobble which was under investigation by her vet. She had to spend sometime in her crate which...

Otterspool News

We get many phone calls asking for help, there are certainly more cats than dogs needing help as besides the fact that people don't get then neutered it is a lot easier to move house and leave them behind. Also if there owners get fed up with them and stop feeding them cats are very resourceful and will often move on and find someone who will feed them!

This was the situation a lady that contacted...

Rocky's Story | Part 4

Rocky had his 10th birthday in the summer and apart from a touch of arthritis remains feisty and full of life. He has a pseudomas ear infection which was initially difficult to diagnose and was resistant to treatment but with new medication we hope it will clear up.

Thankfully there has not been any evidence of recurrence of cancer and we are now 15 months on from his initial surgery. Rocky is a very bossy little...

Alice Kitten's Story | Part 2

Alice will be one at the end of November. With the right treatment and lots of TLC and, of course, her own indominatable spirit, Alice has gone from strength to strength and is now able to enjoy more freedom around the house to play without the acute anxiety of the possibility of injury, although I still have to exercise some caution.

She now has a future which could not have been imagined before her treatment started....
